Charlemagne At the peak of his power the Empire of Charlemagne reached from the North Sea to the centre of Italy, from the Pyrenees into today’s Hungary: He was the most powerful man in Europe. Before more than 1200 years he made Aachen the centre of the Occident. With the construction of his palatinate he created a spiritual and political centre of power. Until today this complex with cathedral and town hall has formed the centre of the city of Aachen. Under the auspices of Charlemagne it came to a cultural upswing in poetry, education and architecture. Besides a uniform writing style, the Carolingian minuscule, Charlemagne also introduced a uniform currency. Get to know interesting historic personalities of his era by participating in this guided tour!
